Overview
A growing renewable energy specialist is seeking a Design Engineer to take ownership of roof-mounted solar PV designs from concept through to installation support. This role would suit someone who enjoys turning real-world site information into practical, build-ready designs, and who takes pride in creating solutions that are safe, efficient, and commercially sound.
Key Responsibilities
Create detailed rooftop PV designs, including panel layouts, cable routes, electrical schematics, and performance modelling.
Translate survey data, roof measurements, and structural details into accurate, installation-ready drawings.
Work closely with project managers, surveyors, and install teams to ensure designs are workable and optimised for each unique roof type.
Produce design packs for planning, grid applications, and installation teams.
Assess shading, generation potential, and system performance to ensure each design delivers real value.
Ensure compliance with current electrical, safety, and solar industry standards.
Suggest improvements to design methods and help refine internal design processes as the team continues to grow.
Skills & Experience Required
Hands-on experience designing solar PV systems (roof-mounted experience preferred).
Proficient in CAD and solar design tools (e.g., AutoCAD, PV*Sol, PVCase, SketchUp).
Solid understanding of electrical principles relevant to small- and medium-scale PV systems.
Ability to interpret site surveys, structural considerations, and client requirements.
Strong attention to detail with the ability to balance accuracy and project deadlines.
Clear communicator who can collaborate smoothly with technical and non-technical colleagues.
Desirable
Familiarity with UK PV standards such as MCS, G98/G99, and building regulations.
Experience designing for varied roof structures (metal, composite, slate, flat roofs with mounting systems).
Relevant engineering qualification (electrical, mechanical, renewable energy or similar).
What They Offer
Salary up to £39,000 depending on experience
The chance to directly influence how projects are designed and delivered
Exposure to a wide variety of commercial and domestic sites
A supportive team that values practical problem-solving and continuous improvement
