Senior Azure Engineer - Platform Engineering (R&D)

We're looking for a Senior Azure Engineer to join the Platform Engineering team within R&D, driving one of the most ambitious cloud transformation programmes in the industry. Our Azure platform supports over 100 production customers - and we're scaling fast.
This is a hands-on, strategic role for someone who combines deep Azure engineering expertise with a passion for building highly reliable, secure, and automated multi-tenant SaaS platforms. You'll help shape our next-generation cloud infrastructure and lead initiatives that directly impact performance, scalability, and customer experience.
What You'll Be Doing
- Architect and evolve our Azure platform to support large-scale growth, improving reliability, performance, and scalability across the environment.
- Lead best practice adoption in infrastructure design, automation, and platform operations - mentoring engineers and raising the bar on engineering standards.
- Automate everything - from customer onboarding workflows to deployment pipelines - using IaC (Terraform, Bicep, Ansible, ARM) to improve speed and consistency.
- Build observability frameworks leveraging Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, and Application Insights to enhance reliability, forecasting, and decision-making.
- Drive innovation by integrating new Azure services, AI-driven insights, and data tooling to optimise costs, reduce onboarding time, and accelerate delivery.
- Champion SRE principles to establish measurable service objectives, improve uptime, and deliver post-incident learnings that strengthen the platform.
What You'll Bring
- 5+ years of hands-on experience designing, building, and operating production-scale Azure environments
- Deep architectural expertise across compute, networking, storage, identity, and security
- Proven experience delivering multi-tenant SaaS or large-scale platform engineering environments
- Advanced Infrastructure-as-Code skills (Terraform, Bicep, Ansible, or ARM)
- Strong understanding of cloud security and compliance frameworks (ISO27001, PCI DSS, GDPR)
- Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines (Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions) and implementing GitOps workflows
- Strong programming ability in Python, Go, PowerShell, or C#, building automation and tooling
- Solid SRE mindset - defining SLOs, improving reliability metrics, and optimising monitoring/alerting
Nice to Have
- Multi-cloud experience (AWS, GCP)
- Knowledge of Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, or Citrix
- Azure certifications (Solutions Architect Expert, DevOps Engineer Expert)
- Experience with container orchestration (AKS, Docker)
- Background in financial services, higher education, or regulated industries
- Understanding of FinOps practices for cloud cost management
- Contributions to open-source or platform engineering communities
