Infrastructure Engineer (Windows & Systems)
Location: Field-based (Client sites across the UK) and Regional Offices
Reporting To: Technical Leadership / Engineering Management
Salary Range: £45,000 - £65,000 (Dependent on experience, certifications, and background)
Security Clearance: Active SC Clearance (or eligibility to undergo SC clearance vetting)
Role Overview
On behalf of our client, we are seeking an experienced and proactive Infrastructure Engineer to design, secure, and maintain Microsoft Windows Server environments, core network services, and backend architectures.
In this position, you will manage traditional on-premise, hybrid, and cloud-based environments, enforce robust server hardening, and handle the foundational infrastructure supporting complex IT integrations-including backend systems for specialised physical security and access control platforms. Due to the nature of client sites, applicants must hold or be eligible for Security Check (SC) clearance.
Key Responsibilities
Windows Server Infrastructure
Build, configure, deploy, and maintain Windows Server environments across physical and cloud platforms.
Execute operating system installations, migrations, lifecycle upgrades, and proactive patch management strategies.
Develop and maintain comprehensive technical system documentation, architecture blueprints, and standard operational procedures.
Core Microsoft Services & Cloud
Administer Active Directory (AD), Group Policy Objects (GPO), DNS, DHCP, and domain services.
Support and manage cloud infrastructure and hybrid synchronisation environments.
Implement and manage Certificate Services and PKI infrastructure.
Network Integration & Security
Configure and troubleshoot wired and wireless network connectivity for servers and core backend infrastructure.
Assist with the deployment, configuration, and troubleshooting of 802.1X network access control solutions.
Work with TCP/IP, switching, routing, VLANs, firewalls, and secure network segmentation protocols.
Specialised Platform Integration
Support server-side infrastructure installations for specialised physical security platforms (e.g., advanced video management systems, access control databases, and centralised security management applications).
Configure dedicated servers, virtual machines, and client workstations specifically optimised to host software solutions.
Assist with major system upgrades, database migrations, and high-availability deployments.
Essential Skills & Experience
Minimum 3 years of experience in a Windows Infrastructure, Systems Engineering, or IT support role.
Strong, hands-on Microsoft Windows Server administration experience.
Deep, practical understanding of Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, and DHCP.
Experience with cloud administration and hybrid infrastructure deployments.
Solid understanding of core networking concepts including TCP/IP, VLANs, routing, and firewall management.
Exceptional troubleshooting skills for diagnosing complex infrastructure and server-level bottlenecks.
Must hold active SC clearance or be fully eligible to undergo the vetting process.
Full UK driving licence.
Desirable Skills
Prior infrastructure or administration experience with physical security management suites (such as Milestone XProtect, Hirsch Velocity, Lenel OnGuard, or equivalent software).
Advanced knowledge of 802.1X authentication and Public Key Infrastructure (PKI).
Proficiency in PowerShell scripting for infrastructure automation and task streamlining.
Relevant industry certifications (e.g., Microsoft Azure Administrator, CompTIA Network+, or vendor-specific security and systems credentials).
